Thorne-Smith was raised in Menlo Park in the suburb of San Francisco. Her father, Walter Smith, was a computer market researcher as was her mother, Lora Thorne, was a therapist. Courtney aged seven years old at the time, divorced her father Walter Smith. She was a part of both of her parents in different periods of time. She has a younger sister named Jennifer who works as an advertising executive. In 1985, she graduated from Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, California. While in high school, she also participated in the Ensemble Theater Company in Mill Valley.
